UC Santa Cruz Merrill College Improvements / UCSC's Merrill College, est. 1968, is a collection of residential and academic buildings with related outdoor spaces; its recent renovation aims to provide universal accessibility and to create a vibrant social heart and physical center. The phased project strengthens visual and physical connections between buildings, pathways, and people, evokes stewardship of the landscape through careful site planning and consistency with campus planning documents, improves way-finding, and maintains and upgrades emergency vehicle access. Material choices align with the UC Regents’ Sustainability Plan, while integrated stormwater management is woven into the design, complying with UCSC’s Stormwater Master Plan. The planting consists of low-maintenance, native or regionally-adapted species to assure the landscape is water efficient and ecologically appropriate. Credit: Al Forster
