UC Santa Cruz: McHenry Library / This renovation and expansion project built upon McHenry Library’s original site design by Thomas Church, circa 1966. As an admired historical landscape, it required careful observation and analysis to perpetuate Church's design principles of blurring the border between inside and out. In addition to promoting porous edges between indoor and outdoor areas, JLJA's approach to the renovation concentrated on updating specific plant while respecting the original design. With the expansion, design focus shifted to echoing the site’s original curved stone walls in a series of outdoor rooms that provide niches for quiet study and small gatherings; these curving walls, moreover, allowed JLJA to solve the accessibility challenge of a 22-foot grade change from the library entry to the campus pedestrian path. The expansion design also includes a large terrace lawn, which welcomes a wide range of group functions, ceremonies, and activities.      Photo: Kris Knutson
