Scotts Valley Library Courtyard   / Working in collaboration with an engaged task force of Scotts Valley community members, library staff, and volunteers, JLJA designed a back patio for the new community library. The playful and community-minded design transformed a narrow asphalt lot into an engaging, family-friendly space with a variety of areas and seating for quiet reading, public gathering, and overflow from community events held at the library. The design challenge of fitting a large program with varied elements and conflicting goals into a small space with a modest budget required a creative design response. JLJA developed solutions that balanced the library's priorities and utilized community resources, especially recycled and re-purposed materials, to meet project goals. Evocative illustrative drawings were used for fundraising, as well as to build interest and excitement in the community. Developing concepts for donor recognition at varying contribution levels was integral to the project's success.
