Santa Cruz Residence / Designed for a family of avid surfers and water lovers, this bluff-edge landscape focused on views to the beach and surf break, smart storage for wet and sandy gear, and a protected outdoor shower for rinsing off. Strategic screening made the most of the long and narrow site, while clever placement allowed inclusion of a spa, firepit, barbecue, and outdoor dining and lounging areas. Decking extended interior flooring to emphasize the indoor/outdoor lifestyle and permeable materials contributed to stormwater management. Green roofs featured plants appropriate to the salt air and thin substrate, such as dune sedge, coast buckwheat, and yarrow. Blending into the surrounding natural environment and conserving water, the landscape echoes its coastal setting with a simple plant palette of native plantings that restore the bluff and prevent future erosion. JLJA worked closely with Feldman Architecture in taking the project successfully from concept development through county permitting.
