Pebble Beach II / Inspired by the coastal winds, and nicknamed "Easy Breezy" by the owner, this project is a play between opposites: movement and stillness, linear and curving, privacy and openness. The landscape design renovation focuses on an improved entry sequence that gradually reveals the front of the house in a graceful series of steps. The interior courtyard features a firepit, festoon lighting, and copse of hand-selected Japanese maples that both invite indoor/outdoor living and serve as a sculptural viewing garden. Facing the ocean, the landscape design creates drifts of coastal meadow grasses and dune plants that act as a "skirt" around the deck. Trees were strategically preserved to frame views of the ocean and Cypress Golf Course, while woodland drifts of ferns and evergreen shrubs were restored around the guest cottage. Discrete fencing throughout allows the family dogs free range; boulders hand-selected at a local quarry reference local coastal rock outcrops and provide slope stabilization.
