Palo Alto III / The owners of this recently-renovated 1923 home wanted a landscape that brimmed with flowers and color, reminiscent of the owner's native Thailand, and that welcomed entertaining, family play, and quiet moments alike. Working with Fergus Garber Young Architects, JLJA added a covered porch with outside fireplace and dramatic lighting that creates an indoor/outdoor experience and echoes the home's interior spaces and materials. The porch opens to a pool and spa, updated with ceramic and painted tiles, and flows across the yard to generous planting beds, cool lawn, and a stately oak. A built-in barbecue and cooking station borders the porch and strategically planted hedges screen neighbors and enhance privacy. Street frontage plantings tie together both facades of the corner lot while a rose garden converts an under-used side yard into a highlight of the property. Photo: Bernardo Grijalva
