Carmel Valley III / The owners renovated this existing Santa Lucia Preserve home to serve as a retreat for them and their two small children, plus a special place in which to relax with guests. The project embraces playful outdoor spaces combined with elegant areas for entertaining in the tree-nestled site edging a creek and slope. A children's play zone next to the informal dining and barbecue area features a sand pit, colorful rubber playground surfacing, string lighting, and a "fossil wall" with impressions made into stained concrete. The main outdoor living area incorporates an infinity-edge spa, a splash-pad fountain with programmable lighting and jet patterns, and a fire pit amphitheater. Planting throughout reflects the preserve's naturalistic aesthetic with scented and colorful plantings located next to the house and transitioning into the woodland setting.
